The Best Camera Gear for Travel
This is not a comprehensive list, but this is a list of items that we either currently use or have tried in the past. We believe that this is some of the best camera gear for travel. This list is great for those looking to take better photos on their family vacations. If you’re thinking of traveling more and contemplating travel vlogging or blogging, this list is also for you!
If you plan to do any serious travel photography, you’ll probably want a DSLR. I’ve also heard good things about micro 4/3 cameras, but I haven’t used any of them. If you have the money to spend, I recommend the Canon 6D. It’s a great price for a full frame camera, and works really well in most lighting situations. If you have a higher budget, the 5D Mark III is a great camera too. If you’re on a budget, I recommend starting with a crop sensor DSLR camera. The Rebel series is great for photography newbies. The crop sensor cameras are lighter, and much more affordable than full frame DSLRs.
If you want a dedicated vlogging camera that is lighter than a DSLR, keep reading. If you watch anyone on YouTube, you’ve probably heard of the Canon G7X. Lots and lots (and lots) of popular vloggers use this camera. While this is a great camera, you might not want to invest so much if you’re a brand new vlogger. The Panasonic Lumix ZS45 is a great alternative, at just over 1/3 the price of the Canon. It has the popular flip screen, and the quality is quite good
What the Lumix does lack is low light capabilities, but at 1/3 the price, it’s still a great camera. I also have a main camera with amazing low-light capabilities, so it might not bother you as much as it does me. To check out videos taken with this camera, check out our YouTube channel.
We recently bought our Drone and we’re loving it so far. A drone might not be great for minimalist packing, but it does take some amazing shots that you won’t be able to acheive any other way. We love the Yuneec breeze because it’s very compact and easy to use. The Breeze comes with two batteries, but with limited flight time you might consider buying another backup.
GoPro or underwater camera
Do you plan to get in the water, near water, travel where it rains? If so, you’ll probably want to invest in either a GoPro or an underwater camera. GoPro has done a great job simplifying things (without losing quality) in the Hero Session. I have been really impressed by the quality, and even more impressed by the price. The GoPro cameras are great for capturing action and anything underwater. However, the distortion is just a little crazy to use it as a regular vlogging camera, in my opinion. There are also several underwater cameras to choose from if a GoPro isn’t right for you. This Panasonic Lumix model is even cheaper than the Hero Session, but doesn’t have the portability of a GoPro.
If you do buy a GoPro, keep in mind that GoPro branded accessories are expensive. Check out Amazon Basics versions of GoPro accessories to save a ton. If you’re on a really tight budget, consider an underwater case for your phone. It won’t be perfect, but it will still allow you to capture underwater photos with a device that you already own. All for less than $10. If you plan to be going underwater with any device, take precautions and bring a “floatie” for them. This two pack is only $12, and has plenty of fun colors so that you don’t lose your stuff!
